Lost the authenticator app? A calm recovery sequence for exchange accounts

What to do, and what never to do, when a phone with your two-factor app is lost or reset: preparation, the official reset flow, identity checks and rebuilding security afterwards.

The authenticator app is designed to be hard to replace. When the phone holding it is stolen, broken or wiped, that strength suddenly works against you. Panic leads people to search for quick fixes and land on fake support accounts. A better approach is to follow the exchange's own reset process step by step, with the right documents ready. The outline below applies broadly to Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget, though screen names differ slightly between them.

Check what you still have

Before starting any reset, list the methods that still work: the account email, a phone number, a passkey on another device, or a backup key you saved when first setting up the authenticator. If you wrote down that setup key, you can restore the codes in a fresh authenticator app and skip the reset entirely. If a passkey on a laptop still works, sign in with it and replace the authenticator from the Security page.

Start the reset from the login screen

If nothing remains, open the exchange app or website and, on the verification step, choose the option stating that the authenticator is unavailable or that you need to reset security. Never start this process from a link in an email or message. The flow usually asks you to confirm your email and phone, then verify your identity again with document photos and a face scan. Have your original identity document at hand.

Expect waiting periods and security holds

Reviews can take time, and after approval most exchanges block withdrawals for a period. The app states the exact duration. These delays protect you from someone who might attempt the same reset with stolen information. Use the time to secure your email account and change its password if the phone also held that login.

Rebuild stronger than before

Once back in, enrol a new authenticator and save its setup key offline, add a passkey on a second device, set an anti-phishing code and review devices and API keys. Write down which devices hold which methods. If any support conversation asked for your password or codes, report it through the help centre, because genuine staff never need them.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Try a saved authenticator setup key or a passkey on another device before requesting a full reset.
  • Start the reset only from the exchange login screen, never from an emailed or messaged link.
  • Keep your original identity document ready for the face scan and document check in the reset flow.
  • Save the new authenticator setup key offline and add a passkey on a second device afterwards.
