Lost access to the email or phone on your exchange account: what to do
When the email address or phone number linked to your Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget account stops working, recovery follows a specific path. How to prepare, what to expect and which offers of help to ignore.
Multiple exchanges | Russia | RUB | fees, access and account safety
Exchange accounts depend on the email address and phone number linked to them. Verification codes arrive there, security alerts go there, and recovery often starts there. When one of them stops working, perhaps an old email provider closed the account or a phone number was cancelled, signing in or withdrawing can suddenly become impossible. Every major exchange has a process for changing these details, but it takes time and requires preparation. Knowing the steps reduces stress and protects you from scammers.
Check what still works
Before starting any recovery flow, list what you still have: the password, the authenticator app, a passkey on a device, access to the email or the phone. Many recovery paths need at least one of these. If you can still sign in with a passkey or an authenticator, you may be able to change the email or phone from the security settings directly, which is much faster than a full recovery.
Use the official change or reset flow
If you cannot sign in, look on the exchange's login screen for an option such as security verification unavailable or reset. The flow typically asks you to confirm your identity with documents and a face check matching your verification. Follow the steps carefully and submit once. Reviews can take several days; resubmitting repeatedly usually slows things down rather than speeding them up.
Expect a temporary hold
After changing your email, phone or authenticator, exchanges usually restrict withdrawals for a period as a safety measure. This is normal and protects you if someone else tried to change your details. Plan around it: if you need funds soon, do not expect them to be available right after recovery. Read the duration shown on screen and wait it out.
Ignore recovery offers from strangers
Posting about a locked account often attracts messages from people claiming to be support staff or recovery specialists. They may ask for your password, identity documents, remote access or a fee. Do not respond. Recovery happens only inside the exchange's own app or website. Once access is restored, add a passkey and an authenticator, update your email and phone to ones you will keep, and store backup codes offline.
