Changing exchange passwords in the right order so you do not lock yourself out

Updating passwords on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget is simple until the email account, password manager and second factor fall out of step. Here is a safe sequence that keeps every login working.

A data-breach notice or a suspicious login often prompts a burst of password changes. Done in a rush, that can backfire: the email password is changed on one device but not saved, an exchange then sends a confirmation code to that inbox, and suddenly the recovery path is the thing that is locked. The fix is to treat the email account as the foundation and the exchanges as the floors above it. Change from the bottom up, save each step before moving on, and expect each exchange to pause withdrawals briefly after the change.

Start with the password manager and the email account

Open your password manager on the device you use most and make sure it syncs to at least one other device. Then change the password of the email account linked to your exchanges, save it in the manager, and sign out and back in to confirm it works. Turn on the strongest second factor the email provider offers. Only when the inbox is secure and reachable from two devices should you continue, because every exchange step that follows depends on receiving codes there.

Change exchange passwords one at a time

On each exchange, open the security settings, choose the option to change the login password and confirm with your email code and second factor. Generate a new, unique password in the manager and save it before submitting. Log out and back in to prove it works, then move to the next exchange. Doing four exchanges in parallel in different tabs is how codes get mixed up and saved passwords end up attached to the wrong entry.

Expect short withdrawal holds and plan around them

Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all commonly restrict withdrawals for a time after a password change, and the security page shows when that ends. Trading usually continues. If you know you will need to move funds this week, change passwords after the transfer or accept the delay. Do not contact support to lift a hold that exists to protect you; the request rarely succeeds and adds noise to your ticket history.

Check what else should be updated

After the last change, review each exchange's device list and sign out sessions you no longer use. Check that API keys still work if you rely on them, since some platforms leave keys untouched while others may ask you to confirm them again. Update any written emergency notes that mention which email goes with which exchange. Finally, delete old password entries from the manager so an outdated password cannot be autofilled by mistake.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Secure and test the email account and its second factor before touching any exchange.
  • Change one exchange password at a time and log back in before moving on.
  • Save each new password in the manager before submitting the change.
  • Schedule password changes after planned withdrawals to avoid security holds.
  • Review device lists and API keys, and delete outdated password entries afterwards.
